Oh the rants I could go on about this. There are a slew of publishers out there. Some have been around awhile and others seem to be popping up left and right. So how in the hell is a new author, someone who is just starting out supposed to know what to do?
There are several ways you can go about choosing a publisher.
FIRST: What genre do you write or want to write? Look for a publisher who publishes you genre.
SECOND: Do your homework. Check out the publisher on P&E and see what others are saying.
THIRD: Ask your friends, Crit partners, who they are with and what they think about their publisher.
FOURTH: JOIN YAHOO GROUPS!!! Especially groups that are not affiliated with a specific publisher. Talk to folks, make friends and connections.
FIFTH: When you find a publisher you are interested in, check out their site. How many books do they have out in each line or genre. Do thier authors appear to be a core group or are they a with variety?
SIXTH: take a chance. Who knows, maybe someone else had a bad experience but you will find a golden egg. Read your contract fully, if something sounds off, ask questions. Don't be scared
